Tech Standards |
These are the proposed standards (draft form at this
point) for what the state DOE expects K-12 students to know and be able
to do in order to use technology for learning. Some of the expectations
are quite ambitious (A kindergarten student should "master"
the ability to recognize and name the major components of a computer and
understand their basic functions)

Acceptable

about the computer for teachers of K-12 students (or anyone else who
wants to teach kids about computers). The site is part of
Discovery Channel offerings. Be sure to look at the menu on the
left part of the screen for lesson plans that deal with a variety of
curriculum areas...history, math, literature, etc. |
Some Useful On-Line Tutorials
Sometimes it is useful to have two window
screens open on your desktop screen when you are working through a tutorial: one
screen with the tutorial directions and next to it the screen of an application
you are trying to learn. It is then an easy matter to toggle back and forth
between the two screen without having to close one and open another. Click
here
to learn how this is done.

Windows
XP Basics |
For those who have very little knowledge or experience (or
some fear about) using Microsoft's Windows XP system, this is a very
worthwhile and understandable tutorial. It is a beginner's guide
and absolutely deals with the basics. Click on a question (ie. How
do I restart my computer?) to see its answer.

|
Windows
98 Tutorial |
If you are using Windows 98 rather than the newer XP, this
tutorial will be useful. It has a question-answer format |

|
|
Microsoft
Word Tutorial |
In seven lessons this is an excellent tutorial on how to use
Microsoft Word. Even if one is very familiar with the program
there often seems to be certain functions that we can't quite recall how
make work...like how to create double spaced lines or how to make
bullets/numbered lists. |
|
Powerpoint
Tutorial |
If your computer has Microsoft office, it has PowerPoint
software. Perhaps overused over the years, a Powerpoint program is
still useful for many occasions.
|
|
Excel
Tutorial |
If you are exploring how to use Microsof Excel for the
first time, this is a very useful "How To" tutorial |
|
Chapters: How to enter text/numbers in cells; formatting
text and numbers in cells; Numbers and Mathematical calculations and
Creating Charts. What is clear after playing with Excel for a bit
is how powerful the application is. |

Travel sites (Orbitz, Travelocity, etc), Voice Over IP services (Vonnage
and others) Diet plans (like Weightwatchers) and much more? "6 Star Reviews" is an invaluable
site. Although it is a commercial site, there is absolutely no
pressure to buy any of the products reviewed. |

Google
Earth |
This is an amazing program that is free and downloadable to your home
computer. It uses map and satelite images to allow searches for just
about any address on the planet. You can tilt and rotate the views to see
3-dimensional terrain as well as buildings. A new Jan 2007 update is now
available. If you are an educator, go to www.google.com/educators/p_earth.html
to see how neat educational activities can be incorporated into
the classroom using this program.
