Encyclopedia, Thesaurus, Almanac

An encyclopedia, dictionary, thesaurus and almanac all in one site covering information on anything and everything. According to the site's claim, it is a "... site favored by teachers all over the world for facts, explanations and definitions on 4 million topics. Winner of the 2006 Codie Award for Best Education Reference or Search Service."  The claim is believable.  Type in search box labeled "Tell me about..." and click on Go.

Internet Public Library

The Internet Public Library is a public service organization at the University of Michigan School of Information and is an invaluable site in terms of how comprehensively it has linked and organized internet sites.  Its purpose is to provide library services to internet users, and its activities include finding, evaluating, selecting, organizing, describing and creating information resources.

MLA Style Sheet

MLA style guide for writing papers, the style recommended by the Modern Language Association for preparing scholarly manuscripts and student research papers. The style guide concerns itself with the mechanics of writing, such as the proper use of punctuation, quotation, and documentation of sources. MLA style has been widely adopted by schools, academic departments, and instructors.

Info-Please 

The Information Please family of almanacs has a reputation for accuracy, proven in print for more than fifty years. Since its debut in February 1998,  the web site ""infoplease.com has continued to live up to the legacy of its print counterparts, receiving recognition as an information resource both on the World Wide Web and in print. This site integrates the various Information Please Almanacs (sports, entertainment and general knowledge) with Random House Webster's College Dictionary and the Columbia Encyclopedia.

 


Common Errors in English

 

This is the site that is  is dedicated to common errors in language  usage but not a site dealing with grammar in general. . It is a site that deals with deviations from the standard use of English as judged by sophisticated users such as professional writers, editors, teachers: it is an excellent page to refer to when, for example,  unsure of which words like "altogether or all together" or " breach or breech" are appropriate.  There is also supplementary page on the site which deals with other often confusing English expressions or usages like when to use the prepositions between vs. among.
Electronic Journal-Integration of Technology in Education The journal features research findings, practical articles, book and software reviews, and commentary on topics of interest from K-12 educators and others.  Click on Archives section to view past articles.  The journal has been in existence since 2002 and offers scholarly articles about the relationship between technology and education rather than "How to" suggestions. 

Middle School

This is a middle school site and was developed by an educator for educators.   Much of its contents is also of interest to parents, students and anyone interested in education. Not only does this site have an abundance of curriculum resource material, but has linked articles and material for school leaders and support staff.  It also has a comprehensive list of lesson plans for academic areas.

ESL/EFL Pages

Simply entitled "My Own Resources" this web site was designed for teachers and students of English as a Foreign or Second Language (ESL/EFL). The site has different sections with, verb tense practice, grammar revision, cartoons, irregular verbs, word search puzzles, crosswords, reading comprehension exercises, and more. Be sure to click on the page's link to the  ESL-EFL World Directory where hundreds of other  links relevant to ESL exist

 

ESL Wizard

ESLWizard is a website for anyone involved in teaching English as a second language and has nformation and resources for such teachers. The site includes  activities and links to other ESL sites as well as information about training in the field and available jobs in teaching English abroad..  This seems to be a fairly new site in the early process of development

 

ESL Learning Activities Page

This is another useful K-6  site (from a more comprehensive site called Busy Teachers Cafe ) to find activities for ESL/EFL students.  It contains English language learning materials, lessons, games and activities and links to other ESL sources.

 

Using English

UsingEnglish.com is a general English language site, specializing in ESL (English as a Second Language) The site contains a wide range of resources for learners and teachers of English, and has been running since the beginning of 2002.   There are contributors from the United States, Canada, Pakistan and non-native speakers, but much of the site uses British English as it was set up in the UK.  This does not, however, take away its usefulness to American readers.  Clicking on the link  "Partner Sites" on the left menu will bring up two other useful sites, " Common errors in English " and "English-Test Net".

Special Education News 

This is a site that focuses on  timely news related to educating students with disabilities. The web site and its newsletter are  centered on the news of the special education field. The  site  also offers  resources to special education professionals in one convenient place. These include places for educators and others to exchange their views, find links to important information at other sites on the internet and keep track of news and events across the country.

MassONE

The Department of Education's Massachusetts Online Network for Education (MassONE) is the Commonwealth's set of web-based applications, resources, and tools for students, teachers and administrators. Using a secure portal, these tools support teaching and learning by enabling collaboration among teachers and students across the state. MassONE supports teachers by providing powerful search tools that provide access to a collection of standards-based lesson plans authored by teachers, researchers, and publishers. Teachers can also browse Department of Education documents and standards-based curriculum resources quickly from any Internet-connected computer. The Northampton district's MassONE Admin is Bill Dornbusch. If you are a teacher in the district, please contact him to request that an account be created for you.  

 

GEM

GEM (Gateway to Educational Materials) expands educators' capability to access Internet-based lesson plans, instructional units, and other educational materials on various federal, state, university, non-profit, and commercial Internet sites.  Educational resources described in GEM range from lesson plans to computer applications and question and answer services.
To begin use "Search The Gem Catalog" to find an appropriate subject and grade level  lesson plan.

 

Annenberg Media

Annenberg Media site uses media and telecommunications to advance excellent teaching practices in American schools. This  is carried out chiefly by the funding and broad distribution of educational video programs with coordinated Web and print materials for the professional development of K-12 teachers. The videos (free and on-line) only need Window's Media Player to be viewed.  Teacher resources are categorized by subject area and grade

 


Literature Sources

This site contains a vast collection of searchable quotes, poetry, literature and famous speeches. Quotes and poems are classified both by subject and by author/poet  There are 11 complete Shakespearean plays and 3 volumes of poems, for example, in the site's comprehensive database

 


Awesome Library

This is a highly regarded site judging by the awards or commendations it has received.  For example,  "Awesome Library " was ranked number 9 for all library Websites in July of 2005 on "100 Top Library Sites."  As of 2007, a number of popular search engines, such as Google, rated the Awesome Library among the top three Web site on many of the key search terms that related to the Awesome Library's  list of  education related categories.   Awesome Library has 33,000 reviewed resources, including the top 5 percent in education.  It is organized by subject matter.

 


Bartleby

Although this site is not nearly as comprehensive as the Gutenberg Project (which has 400 volunteers signed on to help in the work of  proofreading prospective ebooks )  it does publish many of the works of  the classics of literature, nonfiction, and reference free of charge for the home and classroom. It does have access links to encyclopedias, dictionaries, thesaurus and quotation sources.

 


Gutenberg Books   (20,000)

Project Gutenberg is the first (begun in 1971)and largest single collection of free electronic books, or eBooks whose copyright has expired in the USA Book listings.   The site has an online catalog  that can be browsed by author or title .To read a book online use the online catalog  and then click on the Read this eBook online link. You can create a bookmark anywhere in the text being read and can return to that particular bookmark later.   There are 20,000 free books in the Project Gutenberg  library with an average of 400 more being added each month.  Over 2 million ebooks are downloaded each month.

 


Humanities

This is the  National Endowment for the Humanities site and features lesson plans and  classroom resources in art and culture, literature and language arts, foreign language, and history and social studies. It is probably one of the best sites on the web to locate sources relevant to the humanities.  They are  in partnership with the National Trust for the Humanities, and the Verizon Foundation, an educational partnership that brings online humanities resources from some of the world's best museums, libraries, cultural institutions, and universities. Use the pull-down menus to select a subcategory and appropriate grade level

 


Subject Area Resources

This is another site that offers resources and student activities in 14 subject areas from PreK-12.  Although the site often takes a visitor looking for resources to commercial sites, there is enough "free" material to warrant taking a look at what this site offers. The site also contains a "Quick Reference" list of sites that will lead to online Yellow Pages and  sites with calculators that will perform 15 different operations online

 


High School Chemistry Resources

This is a comprehensive resource site for chemistry teachers and has, or can point a user to, just about  everything imaginable for a science resource site: Classroom Management Resources and Tools, Instructional Multimedia and Links, Publications about chemistry, Student Resources and Website Media Resources.  The site even includes chemistry quizzes and games.  "Real "classroom teachers have added expertise and  material to this valuable site.

Children's Literature Site

This is an elementary school book resource site developed by Carol Hurst who taught in Westfield and West Springfield.  It is an exhaustive collection of book reviews collected over many years.  The best way to see the size and scope of this ambitious site is to look at the "Expanded Table Of Contents" section.  Children's books are listed by author, title and grade level.  The section on "Curriculum Areas And Children's Literature" shows how all inclusive the site is.  Math, history, social studies, geography and art among other areas has useful material as well as some insightful advice about how it may be taught in a class.

Web English Teacher

 

Web English Teacher presents many of the best of K-12 English / Language Arts teaching resources: lesson plans, WebQuests, videos, biography, e-texts, criticism, jokes, puzzles, and classroom activities.  This site connects to a multitude of other sites related to teaching English in public schools

Museums

 

Smithsonian

The Smithsonian spans 16 museums, more than 100 affiliates, and seven research centers. What is most attractive about this site is the useful lesson plans it offers to teachers in the area of art,science, history, culture, and language arts. Further, the site can be searched by subject area and grade.

 


N.Y.Museum Of Modern Art

The site is called "Modern Teacher" and connects educators with the resources and collections of the museum. Downloadable PDFs of educator guides, images and lesson plans are available here but mostly for older students.

 


Artcyclopedia

This is the site of links to just about any art museum in the world and a comprehensive index of every artist represented at hundreds of museum sites, image archives, and other online resources: 2100 art sites, 75,000 links, 180,000 art works and 8,200 artists. The museum sites (and links to) in all 50 states are listed, 40 museums in Massachusetts alone.  Included on the site are many articles about artists and their works.  Site also allows for searches for particular artists by name, titles, movement and nationality.

 


Xpeditions-National Geographic

This site was developed by the National Geographic Society and offers comprehensive standards-based geography content to teachers and students. This site includes materials for K-12 teachers their students and their families, and includes an interactive atlas with over 1,600 printable maps and "Xpedition Hall", a virtual learning museum with exhibits aligned to the U.S. National Geography Standards.  The site's "Homework Help" section offers useful material for reports by younger students

 


Gardner Museum 

Boston's  Gardner Museum displays an art collection of world importance, including works that rank among the most significant of their type. Isabella Stewart Gardner collected and carefully displayed a collection comprised of more than 2,500 objects - paintings, sculpture, furniture, textiles, drawings, silver, ceramics, illuminated manuscripts, rare books, photographs and letters - from ancient Rome, Medieval Europe, Renaissance Italy, Asia, the Islamic world and 19th-century France and America. Built to evoke a 15th-century Venetian palace, the Museum itself provides an atmospheric setting for Isabella Stewart Gardner's inventive creation.  The collection can be viewed either by the artist or genre or geography

 


Clark Art Museum --Williamston

 

Although the collections have expanded greatly since the opening of the Clark in 1955, their scope and character continue to represent the taste and interests of Sterling and Francine Clark. Thus the collections focus almost exclusively on European and American painting, sculpture, works on paper, and decorative art from the Renaissance to the early twentieth century. The Institute's greatest strengths lie in nineteenth-century European and American painting, especially the French Impressionists; English silver; master drawings and prints; and, in recent years, the Institute's growing collection of early photography. Museum Of Fine Arts--Boston

This, of course, is an extraordinary museum, housing 335,411 artworks.  To view some of museum's major works on display, click on  "Collections" and then "Online Tour." The museum  houses and preserves preeminent collections and aspires to serve a wide variety of people through direct encounters with works of art. According to its mission statement, "it serves as a resource for both those who are already familiar with art and those for whom art is a new experience."  

 

Smith College Art Museum

The museum's  programming for schools and teachers is targeted to providing students with meaningful experiential learning opportunities, and giving teachers support for their endeavors in the classroom.  K-12 visits to the Smith College Museum of Art are free and may be guided or self-guided. Tours are led by Smith College student museum educators and emphasize a combination of careful visual analysis, discussion and hands-on activities. Many resources—including materials, workshops and consultations—are available to help teachers prepare their classes for a tour or to guide a visit on their own.  Be sure to click on the website's "Collections" to get a sense of what the museum houses. The Web Gallery of Art is a virtual museum with a searchable database of European painting and sculpture from 12th to mid-19th centuries. The Gallery is intended to be a free resource of art history primarily for students and teachers. It is a private initiative not related to any museums or art institutions.

Read-Write-Think

This site was developed in partnership with the International Reading Association (IRA), the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE), and the Verizon Foundation.  Their mission is "to provide educators and students with access to the highest quality practices and resources in reading and language arts instruction through free, internet-based content.    It is a K-12 literacy web site that contains standards-based reading, writing, communication, and critical-thinking activities. It contains a searchable lesson index by grade level, subject area, and topic. 
This is the National Education Association's  site for useful lesson plans that teachers are invited to use. Perhaps the most valuable part of site  is the searchable database "Search Lesson Ideas" where hundreds of lessons reside and are reached by typing in the appropriate keyword.  Even more resources are found by using the GEM (Gateway to Educational Materials" Search Engine found near the bottom of the site's  home page.   GEM provides links to over 40,000  online education resources.  Typing in the keyword "heat", for example, brings up 257 "activities" or "lesson plans"  focused on the concept of "heat"  and clearly marked as relevant to particular grade levels.

NEA Lessons

Educator's Reference Desk

This collection contains more than 2000 lesson plans which were written and submitted by teachers from all over the United States and the world. They can be selected by clicking on a category (Math or Social Studies, for example) or by using the Search The Lesson Plan Collection"  feature of the site.  It has a pull down menu that allows the narrowing of a search by using certain keywords and specifying what grade level.

Interactive Math

Although there is a section on Arithmetic on this site, the site itself leans toward math conceptions and activities that engage high school students.  Geometry, Calculus, fractals and probability are some of the areas focused on. Even the puzzle activities are for students who are comfortable with practicing skills typical of well developed math background.

Phonics Practice

This site makes available  81 free phonics worksheets to assist in learning phonics rules for reading. These   worksheets are printable (using a PDF reader).  The worksheets come with answer keys.   There are also extra activities to help students learn specific skills taught on the worksheet.  Essentially the worksheets  involve students in  learning vowels, beginning consonants, ending consonants and plurals, beginning blends, ending blends, consonant digraphs, long vowel sounds, R-controlled vowels, diphthongs, ph and gh, silent consonants, and more.

Thinkfinity-Marco Polo

The avowed goal of this well-known site is "...to provide teachers with thousands of rich, high quality, standards-based lesson plans and resources covering every core K-12 subject, grade level and class period, and to reach as many teachers and students with MarcoPolo as possible."  What is new about the Marco Polo site is a new element entitled Thinkfinity,  "which is built upon the foundation’s flagship education program formerly known as Marco Polo." The site will also include the foundation’s new Verizon Literacy Network.  Needless to say, it is a powerfully comprehensive site for all K-12 resources.  Click on the Thinkfinity Search Engine  to find an appropriate plan.

Subject Matter-Lesson Plans 

K-12

This site contains over 3,000 free lesson plans from Preschool through High School and beyond that were developed by students and faculty at The University of Missouri.  To find lesson plans that match a particular criteria, begin by selecting a subject like math, art, social studies, language arts , music or " interdisciplanary". Then select appropriate student age group or search for specific topics.  Located on the site is a also a lesson plan template  that was designed to make lesson plan writing easier to do.  

Math Activities-Lessons 

K-12

This is one of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics site and has 91 online activities to engage students in math processes and collection of 524 lessons for preK-12 math educators  in addition to the activities and lessons component of the site there are links to other math sites and also a sectionion on the organization's principles and standards which calls for and presents a common foundation of mathematics to be learned by all students. 

K-12 Literature Guides

This site hosts an extensive list of  K-12 literature guides and offers all kinds of activities  for particular literary works. There are also many web links that are relevant to the activities described and site writers maintain that the links have been scrutinized for their grade and age appropriateness. The site was developed by the San Diego County Office of Education.

Create Diploma/Award

This is a unique site and allows in a short amount of time a user to create a customized, printable  certificate or award  ( Acrobat reader needed).  Site allows for the creation of "authentic" looking, customized awards.

 


Using Microsoft Word 

This is a short guide to enable those completely unfamiliar with using the Microsoft Word 2003 software.  The directions are quite easy to follow and come illustrated.   You may download free excerpt files to be tried out.  There is also an Appendix section which offers.  further useful information about Word 2003

 


Using Microsoft Word -2

This is the site for more advanced training via interactive tutorials on  Microsoft’s Word 2000 and 2003.  Also on the site are clear directions about how to use the web page creator Macromedia’s Dreamweaver MX   

 


The Citation Machine

A neat piece of online software.  The "Citation Machine" is an interactive tool that allows for an easy way to footnote sources accurately when writing some kind of formal or research paper.  Click (on the left panel of the page) the kind of stylesheet to be used (MLA, APA, Chicago or Turabian),then click on the kind of text being used as a source (ie book, journal article, encyclopedia, magazine article, etc). Enter the need information from that source and then click on "Submit."  The software transforms the source information into a proper footnote form which then can be copied and pasted into the research paper.

 


Sounds On The Web

Looking for places to find sound effect files for various thinks like telephone ringing?  Audio files can be found in  several different sound  formats, (AIFF, AU, and WAVE)  These are  are the most popular formats for sound effects on Macintosh, Unix, and Windows, respectively. To exclude a format on the site, un-check the box beside its name. Animal sounds , birds, insects, household sounds, musical instruments and people sounds can be downloaded from a site to a computer by a  drag and drop operation.

 


Way Back Machine

If you have ever experienced dead links on a web page or an unworkable URL,  access  the Way Back Machine  site and then copy the  the URL into the web address box provided on the page.  The Wayback Machine provides links to older versions of  web pages  This is the site that a  nonprofit organization established to preserve Web sites by taking regular "snapshots" and archiving the snapshots. There is even a "live music" archive at the site.

 

Language Translator

This is the site of an amazing, automatic translation engine which allows users to obtain free translations of English text into 11 languages or conversely of  text  of 11 different languages into English.. The translation is generated by a computer, and is displayed instantly.  The translation is ideal for instant, draft-quality results and  provides a basic understanding of the original text but perhaps not subtle nuances. It is an easy process to copy text from another web page and paste it into the "translation engine's" web page.
