City-State Resources

Official City Website This site contains just about every aspect of the city's government as well as links to the various organizations and  institutions that exist in the city

 

City Information From data accumulated by  state agencies this is an invaluable source of information about the city from state aid to the city since 2004, local unemployment stastics, local cultural council, a community profile and services performed by the environmental police.

 

City Guide This guide contains  another short history of the city. The site does have a good list of food and dining places as well as links to businesses, shops and entertainment options.

The Northampton Recreation Department works to promote the well-being of the individual and the community by providing a wide range of high quality and wholesome recreational opportunities to meet the leisure needs of city residents and visitors.

Forbes Library  

The city's chief downtown library that has been operating since 1894 and also home to the Calvin Coolidge Presidential Library collection.

 

Lilly Library  

Built in 1888 the library is near the center of Florence and has just undergone an extensive renovation and expansion

 

Academy of Music This is a special theatre with a long history and a long tradition of presenting local and international talent, both live onstage and on-screen

 

School Support Organizations

VINS  

A private, non-profit organization, founded in 1981, whose mission is to provide volunteers in all of Northampton's public schools. An application for volunteers appears on the site as well as a "wish list" for some of the Northampton schools

NEF  

Established in 1991, the Northampton Education Foundation (NEF) is a non-profit organization created to fund projects and programs that expand educational opportunities, foster creativity, and enhance academic experiences in Northampton's public schools. Nearly $45,000  in grants was awarded to Northampton  teacher-initiated projects this year.

Historic Northampton

 

The museum's wide-ranging collection includes more than 10,000 photographs, documents and manuscripts from the 17th to the 20th centuries,  fine art, furniture, ceramics, glass, metals, toys, tools and implements, and an important collection of textiles and costumes

Sojourner Truth  

This is the site that gives  biographical  details about the famous ex-slave  Sojourner Truth who lived in Florence in the 1850's.

Look Park  

The Park is a city-owned park and is administered by a  Board of Trustees. This park has a small zoo, picnic areas, pedal boats, a steamer railroad and much more

Commonwealth Opera  

Founded as Project Opera by Northampton's Richard R. Rescia in 1972, the organization’s primary goal was to promote the art of grand opera. Since 1989, the company has produced one full-scale opera and one fully staged musical theater work every season, with audiences averaging close to 2,000 for each production. Now called the Commonwealth Opera of Western Massachusetts, it performs primarily in Northampton

The Bike Trail  

The trail  follows the former Boston and Maine Railroad  right of way for ten miles through the towns of Northampton, Hadley, and Amherst. Its gentle grade and smooth surface create perfect conditions for cyclists, skaters, walkers, runners, and cross country skiers of all ages and abilities.  This site has a bit of the trail's history as well as some practical rules and regulations governing the trail's use.

HEC  

This organization promotes learning by educating and supporting students, teachers and administrators  through a wide variety of programs.  The organization is governed by school committee representatives from the 17 local member school districts

Smith  Art  

Although there is a modest admission fee to the Smith museum for those not affiliated with the college, free passes may be checked out at Forbes Library  with a Forbes card  or one from another  library with reciprocal borrowing privileges.
